More about Calli

callibw.jpgCalli just gave me a firecracker grand baby! I don’t have pictures of Jasmine for the web yet, but soon. :-)

Calli was my fourth child in five years time. I was working as a float nurse and doing my apprenticeship for midwifery. Poor baby was trying to grow in a woman that was stressed to the limit. lol By the time I was six months pregnant, I weighed 10lbs less than I had prior to becoming pregnant. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t seem to gain weight. Finally I started gaining, gained 12 in 4 weeks.

Then it happened… I had just seen Ed out the door heading for work and went to climb back in bed. At the same time Calli gave me a swift kick and lo and behold my water broke. I went out into the garage and just caught Ed going down the drive. Told him he wasn’t going anywhere, my water just broke. He thought I was kidding. I made a believer of him right quick. ;-)

I called my midwife and told her it was a high leak and I was going to bed. Hopefully it would seal. She was going to check in on me in an hour or so. By the time she got there I was having contractions. The baby was breech and we tried to gently turn her. No go.

Caleb came in and got on the bed with me. He was NOT going to miss this. :-) He wanted to watch that baby come out. lol He soon realized he had taken a bad position. The next contraction was a doozie and my water broke full force. Caleb got a wet face and arm. I’ll never forget the look on his face when he exclaimed,”Wow mom! That was a bunch of water! It shot clear into the closet!”

Right after that, our worst fears were realized. The baby had gone transverse. I’d have to go to the hospital. :-( Ed stayed with all the kids and my friend Dona (a nurse) drove me. We were going 90 miles an hour all the way to Parkland Memorial. I labored for 7 hours waiting for an operating room. Everything was going fine until a nurse came in to prep my belly. Mind you my water had broken about eight hours earlier and this broad comes in and starts scrubbing on my belly like it’s a subway bathroom. I felt a searing pain and the next thing I heard was, “Get her under she’s bleeding out”. The idiot had dislodged my placenta!

I still pray for the surgeon to this day. He saved my baby and I both. I lost 2/3 of my blood volume. Calli was fine. She didn’t have any body fat so was rather reminiscent of a red little skeleton. ;-) She breathed on her own from the start, so all she needed was to fatten up. Praise God! It could have been soooo much worse.

Now my baby is grown with two daughters of her own. Samara and Jasmine are both blessed to have her for a mommy. I’m blessed to have them all. :-)

I just talked to her a bit ago and she said Jasmine is nursing like and champ and sleeping with her in her bed. Bet the nurses like that! lol Good on her.

When Calli’s maternity leave is over, I’ll be watching the kids full time again. Guess who’s going to have one spoiled baby on her hands. ;-) We’ve already figured out she likes Grannie to rock and sing to her.

That reminds me… I need to bring the rocking chair up out of the basement!

Best be off… lots of planning to do and I plan best when the house is finally quiet for the night.
